Creating A Simple Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes have been around for a while now and there are many ways that you can get started with creating one for yourself. The point of a capsule wardrobe is to do more with less. It has other benefits, too: for example, with a capsule wardrobe, you won’t be overspending on new clothing. Instead, you will be looking for new ways to work with what you already have.

A capsule wardrobe can help people make fewer decisions each day, which can alleviate many mental overloads. It’s also more pocket and eco-friendly.

Outfit watch

Before clearing out your clothing, start tracking what you wear and when. If you always wear shirts and jeans to anything not work-related, you know that these need to be staples in your wardrobe. For 30 days, write down what you did and what you wore. It will come in handy when you’re thinking about essentials later, trust me!

Style check

What you used to wear and what you want to wear might be miles apart, and if that is the case, it is time to do a style check. If you are changing your bedroom to something that you feel suits you more, then you must find wardrobes, sheets, and other dress items to match. Let yourself lean into this new style and create something cohesive.

Quality check

Not everything in your current wardrobe will meet your new wardrobe's needs. It’s not just the style you should aim for, but the quality of the clothing too. Poor quality clothing tear, wash badly, and will wear out much faster. Beware though, once you start doing the good old wardrobe audit you can find yourself doing this often - take it from someone who knows!

Start going through your clothing in your chosen style, and look for quality like good stitching, something that is a piece of good fabric, and more.

Suppose you have some items that you want to keep for longer - great! Just keep in mind that these will need to be replaced sooner, and put a small budget aside to buy them in better quality.

Prepare

Once you have successfully donated and recycled all of the clothing that you will no longer be wearing, do yourself a little favour. Look at the days that you have got coming up, and see some outfits on hangers ready.

Practice mixing and matching your clothing to make multiple outfits. Take a pair of jeans, and then line up a range of tops for the following days. Keep in mind that real denim can be worn for several days before being washed.

To help yourself make the right type of wardrobe:

  • What activity do I do the most? Working? Walking? Running errands?

  • How do I spend my free time?

  • What clothing do I reach for the most?

  • What clothing do I want to stop reaching for?

Use those questions to help you create a wardrobe that takes all of the work out of dressing well - no matter where you are going and what you are doing.

A capsule wardrobe can help to achieve a sense of style without having to spend ages every day looking into the abyss of your wardrobe. Make it simple.

What you wear can be reflected back into the home, and vice versa. Your style should be able to cross into home and interior or fashion. It’s all about the little details: Small Details That Make Your Decor Pop
